You’ve reached part 4 of the Local SEO Guide. You know more than 95% of your competitors about how to be effectively present on the web for both consumers and search engines.

Now you're ready to do keyword research to dominate your local market. This means it's time to find and decide which phrases consumers enter in the Google homepage search bar the most to find products or services like you sell.

These search phrases they use the most become the ones you want 1st page rankings for. By doing so, you get 19X more brand exposure for each search phrase that includes your business on the 1st page the consumer sees in the search results.

How to Know the Right Keyword Phrases

Remember: keyword phrase = search phrase = search term = the words consumers used to find you in Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.

At this point, knowing or finding the best search phrases should almost become intuitive. That's why you focused on what consumers want and what your competition does before doing any keyword research.

Continuing with our mattress store, we know some good ideas already from the earlier research. It's clear ranking for these phrases in the search results would be a good thing:

  • "What is the best type of mattress"
  • "What mattress is best for back pain"
  • "mattress stores your city or town name"
  • "best mattresses your city or town name"
  • "mattress store near me"

There's more you could choose, but you get the idea. We know this from the research we already did.

Phrases Like "Your Service/Product in Your Location"

keyword research - search in location

If your intuition defies you as it does me often, a good place to start is with a search phrase using your product or service in your location.

In this example for the mattress store, the search phrase is "mattress store in tucson az."

Also consider variations of this using the plural form. In this case, "mattress stores in tucson az."

Your content goes here. Edit or remove this text inline or in the module Content settings. You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.

Think of other variations as well. One that is common could be "best mattress store in tucson az" or "best mattress stores in tucson az."

Often services or products may have an "-ing" form of the word. Don't forget about using it.

How do you know what keyword phrases your competitor uses?

Another great free tool is the Adwords Keyword Planner. You will need a free Adwords account from Google Ads to use this.

Open your Google Ads and select "Tools" then select "Planner." Then select the box saying "Find New Keywords."

When you click on the box, it grows and you enter the web page of your competitor.

Then tell it to use the entire site. Finally, click "Get Started."

Be sure to change the region to your city or the nearest large city to your business if you're from a small town.

For my search, I got 402 results. You'll only be interested in the highest results when you get started. Also, think about what a consumer uses to search when they would likely be ready to buy. That's the place to begin.

Later, you can target words for consumers doing research. This will help expose your brand to more people, but won't generate immediate sales. This also helps if you start doing more advanced advertising.

For now, stick to the words eager buyers will likely use. Remember, Google does not provide precise numbers of searches for those not doing ad campaigns. But you will get the data you need to know which search phrases you should begin with.

Also, don't try to rank for a search phrase solely because your competitor does. Your competitor may not be so smart. Chose the search phrases most likely used by your potential buyers or those very close to buying.
